About Dr. Schad

I am a licensed clinical psychologist, practicing in Richmond, Virginia.  I focus on establishing an open and honest therapeutic relationship with my clients, believing that to be a necessary foundation to making change.  Once this is established, I use a variety of techniques to improve general well-being, reduce symptoms, and help my clients navigate difficult times.  I strive to gain a holistic understanding of my clients — strengths and difficulties, cultural influences (e.g., religion, ethnicity, gender, etc.), family context, and unique characteristics.  In collaboration with my clients, I develop treatment goals to facilitate positive change.  In general, my approach is relational and I draw on evidence-based approaches. Seeing my clients achieve their goals brings me great joy.

I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Virginia.  I draw on a wide range of experiences, practicing in such areas as outpatient clinics, a brain injury center for military personnel, a counseling center for college students, and an inpatient psychiatric hospital.  I am trained in a number of evidence-based treatments, including both cognitive-behavioral therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. For couples specifically, I have completed all three training levels for the Gottman Method (see www.gottman.com for more information). I also incorporate mindfulness-based interventions when appropriate. In addition, I have had the privilege of leading graduate students through their first experiences as therapists, as well as teaching courses at my alma mater.
